Some questioned us why do we only target SPEAK. Reason being:
SPEAK, as everyone probably knows by now, won the majority of the seats on the MSC during the last elections. The actions that were carried out by the MSC 2008 were mainly tabled by members of the SPEAK party. The actions of the current MSC, reflects the ideology that the party SPEAK has as a whole. As SPEAK have re-registered their name for this current election, we fear that the same action would be continued again. We fear that SPEAK's actions this year may be reflected next year should they get elected. As quoted by former MUSA in our comments, legacy will continue.
We believe it is OUR student rights to voice out our concerns. We are dissatisfied with SPEAK. And we've seen some of the worst power abuse cases in MUSA history committed by none other than the leaders of SPEAK. Either this year or last year.
And our arguments on this blog thus far are not 'baseless accusations' without facts. Information on issues such as laptop purchase can all be found in the meeting minutes, which ironically was only put up once we noted that minutes have been missing throughout the year till now. And to be honest, I would also doubt the authenticity of the meeting minutes since it's put up only as of late. We never know if the reports have been edited and modified to suit and favor SPEAK's position in this situation. The reports should have been put into pdf format. Where is the transparency promised every year by SPEAK?
Just like how accounts on student funds without professional auditing can be easily manipulated.
Finally, we would like to clarify that we are independent from all political parties involved in MUSA Elections 2008. We have no connection with ANY candidates of SPEAK, SMILE, Election Committee, or individual candidates. We are a group of students who are greatly dissatisfied with the SPEAK governance, and believe that these power abuses should be made known to students. They have a right to know what's going on especially when transparency is lacking, and we believe that together we may exercise our power and rights collectively to push for an improvement in OUR Student Council!

Lets look at this from another point of view. This should be a healthy debate on some of the issues that were brought up. If Speak members intend to defend themselves please do it in an appropriate manner.
Btw, i know there are some speak members that really did an excellent job. For example, the activity chairperson Joyce (pardon my spellings). I think she really put her heart and soul in her work. However, I will not deny that i have some doubts over other council members from Speak such as the president and the vice president. I'm not really convince that buying a luxury laptop is going to save MSC funds. However, I will not come to any conclusion about them. Just my opinion.

Look guys. We are all University students right? Please, let's be mature and use our common sense. First of all, put yourself in the shoes of the current MSC
or the old SPEAK members (whatever you'd like to refer them as). It's quite hard juggling classes, assignments, and MUSA work (and not even get paid!). Criticism
always helps people to improve, but what is needed is constructive criticism not any "OMG YOU GUYS ARE DIPSHITS BLABLABLA" nonsense.
Monash is an international university with a global perspective. What makes Monash unique is that the students are from various cultures and backgrounds, and to
see all those cultures represented would be great. I'm not saying a particular one-race party wouldn't do a good job, we've seen what a number of them have done
throughout the year and hands down for all the blood sweat and tears they've sacrificed for us. But once again it comes back to the individual and not the Party.
Whether the election candidate is from (this year or past year's) SPEAK, (last year's) BLAZE, or (this year's) SMILE, the voting process allows us to tick the
individual not the party ticket right? So really, all this "SPEAK ideology" doesn't exactly make sense. As long as we choose based on their capabilities, and not
what their party is or who they are friends with, then you are already doing good for the Monash student body.
People who uses their brain and not their temper will see the logic behind all of this, and not let any rumours around the grapevine affect their decision.
Let's just wait for the election booklet and election week shall we?

Just started to read this blog. At first it says so no to speak. Then it goes on to what speak has or have not done. Then it evolves to students pitting against each other. For crying out loud people, what is the use and point of slandering and making certain statements that cannot be backed up with evidence. What is this, a place for you to release your anger over something that happened to you because as far as the comments evolve from saying what the current problem are to pure insults and yo mama and yo papa insults. Grow up people, if you think that by doing that your point and voice can be heard then u are 100% wrong. What it will do is just cause people that u insulted to get angrier and insults u back and the cycle goes on. I do go to MUSA offices regularly but i am not involve so i dont know much of what goes on there. So concerning the cases that have been brought forward, if it is indeed true then it is just a matter of time before it is found out and if it never happened then the people that started to slander or insult others would be feeling pretty stupid then. I agree with zhen's earlier post that it doesn't matter which party anyone belongs to, if he/she is good at their job then they are good, if they are bad then they are bad. What's important is the benefit the students get and preserving the welfare of the students. What happens when new students or current students see the comments and post? what would they think of the students and student leaders?
Anyway. i hope i havent insulted anyone or slandered anyone, quite a long post. Hope that you guys and lose the anger and comment nicely and please do hold back on the personal or any insults. No one likes to be slandered or insulted

Those students who join the exchange and transfer program are strongly advised not to fly back to your home country, Malaysia. The country political is unstable over there, and right now Monash Malaysia is also another bad environment for students who wish to study abroad.

Why is it wrong to spread our student govt wrong doing online?
Just like our national level politics, BN had the leisure of controlling TV and newspaper media. Until they couldn't control the internet, they made a whole fuss about it.
So what's wrong with spreading what students should know online?

If they are doing something for you, as promised, and not just merely, for e.g. buying a laptop solely for the sake of writing bloody minutes, but using it to benefit the students as a whole, THEN SO BET IT!
So, what has the current MUSA done for Monash?

Street Carnival : did all students that attend enjoyed it?
Ball : will it be success? or sucky?

i truly understand this and it is monash students' luck to have a dedicated musa committee member like you. you should be aware of all sorts of problems caused by the top leaders of current council (SPEAK). as mentioned before, there are many other current council members who were from SPEAK that are really capable and dedicated. just that, the leaders of the party ruin the party's foundation and reputation.
there is always a saying, if the leader of an organization is corrupted, the whole organization will still collapse regardless of how capable the other members are. consider again, the leadership of the new SPEAK.. we will know if we have made sufficient observation and done some background research.

Why is an extra laptop needed?
I don't see how it may be necessary.
In fact, last year's council did pretty alright without an extra laptop.
The Editor's office was well equipped with Photoshop and was able to produce sufficient issues of MonGa throughout the year.
The General Secretary was able to run meetings efficiently without interruption.
The Activities Chairpersons were able to produce good quality posters and publicity materials.
The Ball Ticketing Committee were able to administer ticket sales and collection effectively.
The Ball Entertainment Committee were able to deliver weekly publicity performance with sound systems from Facilities Dept.
So in what ways an extra laptop is needed?
The president should stand out and fix all the matters or just resign from his post if he can't able to explain all the matters to the public.
SET UP A "ROYAL COMMISSION'' just to question the key officer about what is really happen in this council. And also, Invite ACA to investigate about the corruption matters.

I admit that by not revealing our true identity sometimes might give ways to people that spit out statements that are not supported by evidence. However, not revealing your true identity sometimes also allows people to speak their true minds without worrying about their own safety or even the current council would take any bias actions against them. Isn't that why you put your name as anonymous in the first place?
Enough of him. Back to the topic. I agree that council members should be chosen regardless of which party they belongs to, it is their individual capabilities that matters. In general the MSC is controlled mainly by ex-Speak party members and from comments in this blog shows that there are a lot of dissatisfaction with their work.
It is true that there will be a lot of stress when there are MSC work and assignments and exams, but this is the challenge of being a member of the student council especially in a prestigious uni such as Monash. Isn't that what they sign up for when they decided to run for the elections? There is a reason why they were chosen. If it is such a easy come easy go job to be a member of the student council then any Tom Dick and Harry can run for the election. There is NO EXCUSE to be under performing. If you can't take the stress then don't run for election in the first place. It is a privilege to be able to represent help Monash students to exercise their rights. Do not take your position for granted.
As for the new Speak president Mohd Ikmal. I don't see how a person that do not have the courage to run for election in the previous year and SNATCH the post from a VP that been through so much for the position while utilizing his "special" relationship with Darren(current MSC president), can actually dream of becoming the MSC president. I personally believe that this is too much for him to handle. Hope i didn't offend anyone as this is just my personal opinion.

Irrana, I perosnally found your comment bias. In no way SMILE has ever say, " We're promoting Chinese ONLY, other race bug off!". Have you ever heard them saying that. Both parties have a nice blend of local and int'l students. Mixtures of different races and ethnicity. Since when is the MUSA election is all about people's skin colur, nationality???

For those of you who think SPEAK is an "ok" council, and that there is no constructive examples of them abusing their powers...well, let me tell you that they were very rude and evasive when I questioned them.
I have nothing against SPEAK and once thought that they make a good council. To my horror, they used words like "you are bitched-up" and start calling their "gangster" big-size friends to assert pressure on my friends and I when vocal arguments cannot be won by them.
Simply put, 20 of us were cheated of our money in the Monash Ball by the so-called representatives of MUSA who "are not in charge but are in the MUSA committee and get orders from MUSA" (I am quoting those who approached us and insisting that we do what MUSA said, but when asked who exactly is responsible for such orders...no one took up the responsiblity).
In the end...20 of us lost to 11 of the MUSA members and their gangster-like partners. If this is not abuse of power and misuse of MUSA's name, then you ppl are welcomed to define what is.

well im not a party member of any kind...just a student in monash, from what i saw on the miss monash nominees is that there WERE VERY FEW INTENATIONAL STUDENTS NOMINATED!!! SO HOW DA HELL ARE THOSE GUYS GOIN TO FINALIZE YOU IGNORANT HAVE NO CARE IN THE WORLD ABOUT WHATS GOIN ON IN MUSA PEOPLE IN THE BALL?!!
and if you guys...the ones who made this blog...if you have no balls to show yourself to us to 'VOICE OUT' your opinion...pls dont be so cheap to voice them out here...i can very well say that i did not see your ugly faces there...either you were there and that ure balls shrunk and u did not voice out letting other ppl who at least had the guts to voice out their opinions... I personally know few of the candidates in smile. I do speak mandarin to few of them. But wats the problem? Its jus my choice to converse in the language that I want. I also know that Li wen(secretary) and Luke(publicity). I know they cant speak mandarin. For people like Liyana(treasurer), Imrah(Activities), Steffi(VP), Sam(rep), Jeevan(rep), Cherly(rep), I don think they can speak mandarin also. some of them are international students also. Im sure there are more people in Smile party cant speak mandarin also. So don say that smile is mandarin group la.
